The Deep Dive is a new tasting series where we’ll focus on one producer or region and go deep!
On Wednesday October 15th at 6pm we’re going to share the wines of Cerbaiona. You haven’t heard of Cerbaiona? Not to worry, until this May David hadn’t either. David was at a wine industry tasting, and almost passed this table by until he was prodded by another attendee to not miss these wines. David was floored by the exceptional quality of the Cerbaiona wines, it’s a very rare day that David gets to enjoy wines of this caliber, particularly from a previously unknown winery.
Cerbaiona is based in Tuscany and makes wines in Montalcino, the area best known for Brunello di Montalcino. Cerbaiona makes 3 wines - Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, and Grammatica, a Toscano IGT red. That’s it. No extra fluff, just pure focus on exquisite wine. Plus they only make about 1200 cases annually, so there isn’t much to go around. They farm biodynamically and have a minimalist approach in the winery. Honestly I can’t convey in writing how good these wines are, they simply need to be experienced.
For this tasting we’ll start with a delicious champagne to clean off our palates and prepare for the experience. Then we will taste all three of the wines Cerbaiona makes:
Grammatica 2022 $42
Rosso di Montalcino 2022 $98
Brunello di Montalcino 2020 $295
Clearly these wines aren’t cheap, the best things rarely are. That being said, David rarely thinks expensive wines are worth the price tag, and you can rest assured that these absolutely are. For perspective, we’ve enjoyed a couple of these bottles at our own table.
We’re limiting this tasting to only 8 guests so that everyone gets a generous pour of all of the wines, plus we’ll have some nibbles to accompany the wines, since Italian wine is made to be enjoyed with food. This is a tasting not to be missed!
